Electric Smoker vs Charcoal Smoker: Which is the right option for you?

A smoker isn’t same as a griller and while you can probably compromise on a griller, the same is not true for a smoker. So, what type of smoker should you buy? There are multiple variety of smokers out there but you may only buy one, so make your choice count. Choose the right smoker for yourself by weighing both the pros and cons of them all, but in this article we will just focus on Electric smokers and Charcoal smokers.

So, let’s take a look at how different they really are from each other:

Electric Smoker

If it’s your first Smoker and you are one of those people who need easy tools to handle, then Electric Smoker would be the perfect choice for you.

Most Electric smokers can do anything from barbequing at 220 degrees F to cold smoking of fishes, jerky, etc at as low as 60 degrees F. They usually come in two models: analog and digital, so you can set your smoker’s temperature quite easily without any hassle. The best part about an electric smoker is that it is automated, all you need to do is select a temperature and a time and just load up your dish and go chill somewhere. But although an electric smoker will cook your food faster, it won’t give the most authentic smokey flavor to your food.

Although it works as a versatile tool, it is not portable since it needs to be plugged into an outlet, so goodbye BBQ picnics in a park if that is what you were planning.

Another advantage of Electric smokers is that it is hassle-free. You just need to plug in your Smoker, push a little buttons, and adjust the settings according to your need. Voila! You are all set to smoke your BBQ without breaking a sweat. But do remember that if there is no electricity and you have a BBQ party to host, your guests are in for a disappointment.

So, while Electric Smoker might sound an easier deal, do think if you are ready to make a few sacrifices.

Charcoal Smoker

The thing which speaks for itself in a Charcoal Smoker is the authentic flavour which it provides to it BBQ. The best tasting BBQ always comes from cooking with charcoal, don’t let anyone tell you any different. This is so because charcoal combusts the wood in blue flames which is considered the right way of burning which just cannot be said for Electric smokers, which are said to smolder the wood resulting in an inferior Smokey taste. As a result, the Smokey flavour gets better absorbed by the BBQ meat.

Although Charcoal Smoker may provide the best BBQ, we cannot ignore the fact that lighting a fire is a bit of a hassle. You will have to start a fire, keep on stoking it at several intervals and generally make sure that your charcoal isn’t exhausted or that the temperature isn’t set too high. Charcoal Smokers require a lot of effort on the part of the chef and simply putting food for smoking won’t do you any good.

Another drawback would be the charcoal cost. Charcoals do cost a lot and tend to get over sooner, so if you want a budget – friendly Smoker, you should probably skip out on this one.

That being said, charcoal does have many advantages over Electric Smoker. You can get your Charcoal Smoker anywhere and host a party with it as it doesn’t require any electricity, just buy some charcoal and wood and you should be good to go. You can also add two layers of flavouring on your food by getting a flavoured charcoal and burning it together with some wood chips. This adds an intense flavour to your BBQ making it infinitely tastier.

So what do you think would be the perfect Smoker for you? Would you go for a hassle-free, easy work Smoker? Or would you sacrifice a little time and energy and choose a Smoker to turn out the perfect flavoured BBQ? The choice at the end is yours.
